Severe Weather Guide for 2014

Severe weather season is fast approaching in Kansas – in fact, it may already be here. Like spring cleaning, preparing for storms is an annual practice in the heartland. As part of the Lawrence Journal-World’s guide, I worked with two other reporters to gather information and present this story. Each piece of this guide is in an alternative story format, from a flow chart to help you determine where to go when a tornado is about to strike, to a simple list of safety tips.

The most detailed piece I created was the emergency kit guide. Inspired by one of my favorite blogs, Things Organized Neatly, I gathered the bare essential items one would need in a kit. Then I created a CSS image map, so hovering over each piece displays a short description of the item and what you need it for:

Click the image to go directly to the CSS image map of my emergency kit guide.

Click the image to go directly to the CSS image map of my emergency kit guide.

For the remainder of the guide, I used anchor tags and divs to create a floating table of contents to the left, so that clicking an item will take you and the table directly to the corresponding section.

What did you think? Let me know!
